Special window lift cable fasteners

PostPost by: alexblack13 » Wed Aug 31, 2011 8:16 pm

Hi Guys,

I have now made a fair few sets (even exported a few to USA and Australia!!) of these non glass breaking fasteners where the cables are gripped by a central grub screw and do not rely on tightening the fastener against the glass to grip the wire rope. A sure recipe for exploding side windows. I broke two! Sod that!

So.. Here is a wee offer and a chance to do some good with a few quid. I have only ever asked recipients of these hand made parts to make a small donation of whatever they like to the British Heart Foundation to help them continue with their great work, and I want to keep this going. So. I will make anybody a set in return for a small donation / sponsorship to my Son's page as below.

http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundrai ... CraigBlack

Even if you don't want or need a set, feel free to make a donation if you so wish.

Best regards..

Alex:

Good on you to offer your hard work for charity. They are blessed.

Being one of the lucky chaps with the manual "grab the little knobbie thing and pull/push like hell to get the window up" mechanism, I presume your contraption is for power windows? Or are they crank windows? I don't think I'm a candidate, but would be curious to see photos of the parts and their application.

Cheers,

Dave

"Wee sketch". You know, one of the best things about this community is that I get to travel to Merry Olde England (or perhaps Ireland in the "Wee" case) each and every day.

Thanks for the drawing. Yes, more confused than before, except that I now know I have no current need for said part. <g>

As a recipient of Alex's generosity I can enthusiastically endorse his redesigned window bolts. He made me a set about a year ago when I was suffering from yet another birds nest of cable in the passengers door - caused, as always, by being worried about tightening the normal bolt and having the cable subsequently pull through when the window hits the stop.

Tightening the grub screw still did cause the odd bead of sweat to appear even though I knew there was no stress on the glass - old habits etc! So far they've functioned exactly as they should - windows and bolts! Well worth the donation I made to BHF even if it was just to stop me having to take the door apart yet again.

I will get started to making a few sets then...

You lot get donating....    It is a great cause and we all might need help at sometime. I just can't thank them enough. I asked my consultant about their work and without going into great detail he said they were very much at the fore front of all the new tech' and procedures being tested and developed. Basically said they could not work without the charity. Sad in some respects, and a lot of good comes from America too, but BHF are also exporting a lot of excellent work all over the world. How cool is that? But they need support.

On my 60Th Birthday we held a bit of a 'do' in Dunfermline City hotel and instead of prezzies I told everyone I wanted donations to BHF. We raised just under 500 quid!! Even the fantastic live band gave me back some of their fee to donate. Wonderful! Still got a few bottles of wine though, which I Could not drink much of at the time as I was running up to my Op' date.. The op' was not much fun but hey, three months later I was brand new. So, If any of you are in the same situ' do not hesitate to get it sorted. I can eerrrr, heartily recommend it. I feel just great now! And, I have just skated away from the very thin ice I was standing on..

Thanks in advance.

CU next week Rob. Heart felt thanks too for the sponsorship. Unfortunately Craig will be offshore when you visit, but I will take you to his home to meet Angus, he is just about 8 months old :) :)

A huge big thanks to everyone who has donated / sponsored Craig's fundraising efforts. The ball is now very def' rolling along.

Thanks and well done. I should have the finished fasteners off to the recipients soon..

Amazing response guys Thanks. And, yet another set sent off today to the U.S. of A .... ;-))

Just to let you know I have been experimenting with some stainless fasteners. Unfortunately I can't get 1/4 unf easily though and where I can, they are prohibitively expensive. So I have mad a few sets from M6 (Less than 0.2mm smaller diameter) with stainless half nuts (Nylock) too. V neat n tidy. I tested a couple to destruction and they are very tough considering the drilling's. They should be well fit for purpose. I have sent a set off to another Engineer in our group for his pinion, and if he concurs then they will be available in stainless soon. The set I sent to USA is in stainless, & I am completely confident they will be spot on...

So, any one else? ..... Steel or stainless? Your choice.

Big thank you to everyone who has ordered a set and donated to my son's Marathon fundraising page on Virgin Money Giving. He is well on his way to target. We have a car boot sale next and a horse racing night planned also...

Hard work this fundraising!!

Well done everyone and many thanks again..

Kind regards.

And a big thank you again to all who have donated.

We need more though.. Get your orders / donation in to this great cause... Craig still has a way to go to reach target but we are well off the ground now..

Alex

I must be the engineer! I will try and get my speeling corret. The fasteners are well worth contribution for charity. They work as I have just fitted them and cycled the window operation quite a few times. So now the window assembly will be fitted to the door connected up and forgotten about.

Thanks Alex no shattered windows no wire rope on the floor and a satisfied engineer. Who said rebuilds are not fun
