S2 Steering rack greasing

PostPost by: ken ob » Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:16 pm

I am just about to service my 1965 S2 for the first time and having had a quick look it appears that there is no grease nipple or access to one on the steering rack. The fibreglass below the radiator hides this area much more than on an S4.

I have only worked on S4 models in the past and they all had a grease nipple
(or blank to fit one).

Is access impossible without cutting away some fibreglass?

many thanks, Ken.
Slightly confused by everything since the invention of the wheel.

Same problem here on an Elan Coupe (S2.5). No access to grease steering rack ?

In 30 years of owning an S2 I have never greased the steering rack (it was replaced with a new unit circa 25+ years ago as part of a full restoration / chassis replacement) & it is still perfectly tight!!

Provided that the rubbers are in perfect condition & totally sealed, water cannot get in & grease cannot get out (this is a car that has been very carefully inspected & fully serviced every year irrespective of mileage - used regularly for competition / track stuff as well as on the road)

Thanks for the reply Dave
At the last MOT it was pointed out to me with the front wheels off the ground the steering was a little 'notchy', not enough to be an 'advisory' but their thought was the steering rack may be 'dry'.
