Have a look in Plus 2 Workshop Manuel.
It says remove number plate and drill hole.
Then use screw driver in hole to release the Boot Lid.

If neither of the above methods work, if the hinges are of the Hillman Imp type you can drive the hinge pins out which should allow you with care to lift the boot lid and get at the catch.

Your problem could be that the "springy" bit is not central to the body mounted contact. It has become offset so that even with the release fully back it still is held a bit.
Get a helper to push down on the boot lid whilst you are operating the cable. (Normal or wheel arch.)
When you are at full pull - get him / her to pull the lid upwards with a bit of a jerk. (No comments please!)
I have had this if someone moves the car by pushing on the boot lid "lip". Which is the natural place to push!

If you are still in trouble remove rear parcel shelf and use a metal coat hanger (squashed into a long thin rod with hook on end) and with a torch use this to hook around the metal lever (the wire attaches to) and pull. This will work if it is the wire that is not activating the lever mechanism.
