Lucas radiator fan motor, which brushes?

PostPost by: JonB » Wed Sep 25, 2019 2:31 pm

Hi

I've a Lucas electric fan on my car, seems to be very effective. I took it apart to clean and lubricate the bearings and found the brushes have very little life left in them. There's no identification marks other than LUCAS ENGLAND.

The PCB also says "Lucas England". It looks like the brushes are crimped to the wires, so I would be looking for the set as some DPO has cut then connected the motor twice, once with crimp connectors, then an inch or so further along, with a 240v connector block. Awful.

Any idea what sort of brushes they are, and where I can get a set from?

Actually, after a quick snout about I found this very similar radiator fan brush assembly picture, from a Jaguar.

This is a new part and at the brushes don't look that much shorter than mine. So perhaps I'm OK?

You would be looking for these:

But those brushes look fine.

Well, I've been struggling for a while with my existing motor and now, after pulling it off the car and disassembling it (yet again!) I found that the wires that connect to the brushes are a bit stiff. They seem to be pulling the brushes away from the armature when the external wire is tweaked, leading to loss of power (and most often, no power at all). I found this replacement, though:

Not too bad, and I've ordered one. Hopefully that'll be the cure I am looking for. I suspect my occasional misfire is due to the engine getting too warm due to the fan not running properly, but we'll soon see.
