Protecting suspension parts when rebuilding / restoring

Good Morning all, as some of you may have seen from earlier posts I am just restoring / rebuilding the front suspension on my Elan. My question today is what have people found to be the best way to protect the parts from corrosion? If painting them, is there any recommendations as to a particular brand or type. Have people tried metal blackening with any success? or what about powder coating? What colour (if any) was used originally for the suspension components and did the brake calipers have any form of protection when new and if so what colour?
Any advice would be greatly recieved
Thanks in advance Simmo
