Front shock adjustment wheel won't work

Almost exactly 10 years ago I fitted TTR adjustable shocks and lower springs. They have been great, no complaints. I was resetting the front suspension after just fitting new wishbones and found that the aduster wheel on one of the shocks just turns in both direction without clicking or ever stopping.

I spoke to TTR who advise it is internal and therefore the shock would need to be returned for a service/repair.

Before doing that I wanted to check if anyone has had this happen and if yes did they find a simple fix? I feels like the adjuster wheel has become disconnected from the valve. The shocks work great otherwise.

I've had two Elans in the past Martin, both with this, or a similar set-up from TTR. Unfortunately they always worked perfectly whilst adjusting, but I did always give them a turn whenever I was under the car, to make sure they still worked, and weren't seized. I think your diagnosis is spot-on.

Thinking about this overnight there had to be a simple reason for the adjuster wheel not connecting to the valve.

Put the car up on the lift to get some light on it

Noticed a tiny lock screw in the adjuster wheel, this is an enlarged photo

Undid the lock screw, a ball bearing fell out

Cleaned up the aduster wheel and the spigot it sits on

a dab of grease to hold the ball bearing in place and refitted

It now works perfectly again. I'm guessing the lock screw worked loose over time.
Must paint that ARB sometime soon.

Hi Martin,
Re-Pic of your scissor lift.
Couldn't help but notice that you had your car the opposite way to what I always understood was reccomended with that type of scissor lift. The recommendation I always understood was that the end of the car with the weight goes over the ram end. Interested to hear your thoughts and if you find it is stable enough that way around?

I have been procrastinating over various types of Scissor Lifts for years now but recent removal of my engine and gearbox to fit a Type 9 has made me realise that it is time I sorted the issue, I am just too old to be grovelling around on the floor anymore!

Hello Alan

I was unaware of the perceived wisdom about the way round to use a scissor lift. I can understand the logic, however I have always used it his way, over 3 years now, and not just for the Elan. It is perfectly stable the way I have used it which has been a lot. It can take up to 2700KGs so with a 630KG car on it its not under any stress.

It sounds like you don't need convincing but it is the best tool I have ever bought for in my garage.

Good luck with your engine and gearbox refit.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for the reassurances regarding stability. I don't have a lot of space in my double garage that is one of the issues however my poor back says I now need to get on and buy a scissor lift!
I was all set to buy the Quickjack TL at one time but the cost of it in the uk nowadays and having watched a couple of disaster videos of that unit I am back to looking at a conventional mid rise scissor jack similar to your unit.
