If they're anything like mine they are held on with "teeth" and removing them scratches the paint...

Mine, like John's, have lots of teeth and are on very tight. I won't be taking them off until I'm ready to repaint my wheels.
If you really want to remove them, gently pry with a flat screwdriver all around the circumference a little at a time. It might take a while. You will still likely take off paint but the trim ring might survive.

Do they need to come off for tyre replacement ?
