Plus 2 tyre pressure

PostPost by: Dieschelan » Tue Nov 17, 2015 12:02 am

I will put new tyres in my plus 2. Now I have 185 70 R13. Can someone recommend me the correct tyre pressure for these tyres. I have stock alu wheels (13x5.5)

Hi. I don't know of any correct or reccomended pressure, but I run my 185 tyres at 21 psi.

I think you are all cruisers if running those pressures and your focus is that beautiful Plus 2 ride quality and not the ultimate in handling. Nothing wrong with that as its personal preference.

Most modern tyres grip best in the 28 to 32 psi pressure range. Light cars at the bottom end heavy cars at the top end.

For road use when when you have little pressure rise in use I aim for around 28 cold and maybe 30 hot front and rear in my plus 2 on 175/60 x 13 tyres. If you like a little under-steer then drop the front a psi or two. But my focus is handling so I trade off a little ride quality at those pressures for handling

cheers

Interesting. I assumed the pressures were related to the weight of the car and just use the standard spec.
Maybe time to experiment a little.

I'm with Rohan, I run 30psi all round with 165/75's. No understeer, delicate balance to oversteer. Ride quality still good.

Same with my Esprit but even more exaggerated, 32psi front, 28 rear, helps dial out the understeer.

Cheers

I have used the Rohan / Rob type numbers on the track (or maybe 2 to 4 psi higher), but usually go about 24 psi all around when touring with my 80 profile tires. The car is so light the tires don't warm much. I add about 2 psi to the rear when totally loaded with luggage.

As Rob says, a bit higher (~4 psi) in the front for the Esprit on track, but usually run the recommended 32 to 35 psi all round for the road.

Anyway, play a bit as it does make a noticeable difference.

Try 38 to 42 on the track with street tires.
It will feel AWFUL but the clock says it is very, very fast.

The appropriate tire pressures are those that best suit your intended use and the condition of roads that you encounter most frequently. I recommend starting with the standard pressures of 20F/24R and go up in small increments to find the optimal state for you. What I found with my +2 is that the side wall stiffness of the tires is an important component of overall suspension stiffness. The greater the tire pressure the greater the sidewall stiffness. I have always gone back to the standard pressures because roads in the north east of the US are often rough due to winter freeze/thaw cycles and lack of investment in repair. In comparison I used to own a MGB-GT and that responded well to higher pressures, say 32 psi front and rear. The MG's suspension was hard as a rock in comparison to the +2. When I first owned my +2 I put the pressure up to 30 psi or so and found it almost undriveable on rougher road surfaces. I am sure it would have been fine on a good track surface but that is not what I have to drive on every day.
