Rimbellishers - way to protect the paint?

As part of my quest for new tyres on the Sprint, I have decided to refurbish my wheels before getting the tyres replaced. I have rimbellishers fitted, but on close inspection the teeth on the rimbellisher have carved grooves through the paint that have now rusted. The only advice I could find on this forum was to coat the wheel in waxoyl before fitting the rimbellisher, but I don't want to chew up a nice newly painted wheel.
Apart from leaving the rimbellisher off (which may have to be my course of action) are there any ways to fit these without damaging the wheel?
Thanks for any advice.
Andy.

Andy,
I'm not sure there is a good answer to this one. I used waxoyl on the prongs in the hope that if/when the paint was scratched when fitting them it would get some waxoyl treatment at the same time.
I think some paint damage is inevitable.
FWIW I also waxoyled the inside of the trims in the hope of preserving them for longer.

I left my embellishers off for that reason. But how about something like a clear, adhesive tape like material that will take the scratches? Apply at either the pronged locations on the wheel or go all around the wheel. Just thinking out loud here.....
