Seriously light wheels quest

PostPost by: laurenth » Tue May 31, 2011 1:51 pm

Hi guys!
I am currently building a fast road spec elan +2.
I am currently looking for a lightish set of wheels.
Minilite are looking good but very heavy (6 kgs for a 13" wheel!...)
Mag 26r style are not suitable for the elan +2 (5 pegs instead of 4)

I think a sub 5 kgs wheel would be a good compromise between weight and cost.

Any ideas????

Thank you!

Hi

I just weighed a standard steel wheel; it comes in at just under 5kg on my bathroom scales. That may be an option?

Hi guys,
thanks for your help.
well, mag wheels are great but mega bucks. can i justify that amount of money for a fast road spec? I don't think so.
the steel wheels have been considered. you're right, those are pretty light. Problems are: they rust quick if you drive the car every week under every weather, they can be a bit wobbbly (riveted construction...crasy...)
wheel weights.com is a great site but with KO wheels it is a whole new ball game i.e. not so common.

thought about the standard +2s alloy wheels.
Any idea about the weight for those???

Thanks!

Hi

Have a look at TTR website http://www.tonythompsonracing.co.uk/mainframe.html for light race wheels. I doubt they will be cheap but they should be able to tell you the weights.

Laurenth,

This is probably a non-starter, but if you are concerned about weight, a standard Elan will be lighter than any +2, no matter how much weight saving techniques you throw at it.

Then there is the trade off of bolt on vs knock on with bolt on being lighter and having greater wheel selection.

Aluminum hubs and light weight calipers decrease weight before addressing wheel weight.

Then tyres. 165-13 XAS is a starting point. Equivalent rev/mile tyres are 185/70-13, but hard to locate in high performance rubber. Equivalent rev/mile figures are with 185/60-14 and 185/55-15 tyres and wheels.

Superlight wheels (http://www.superlite-wheels.com/) have light weight wheels of various weights and prices and will build to your spec. Their magnesium wheel is available in 26r pattern.

Lots of options.
