Rimbellishers or Rim-embellishers

Dear All

Just about to sort out my spare wheels and check them for trueness? etc but they are fitted with chrome (stainless?) trims....with no visible fixings...how do you remove them without scratching the paint?

Hi John

It depends on what they are; I had Mk1 Escort ones on my +2 they just push on and grip the wheel, so you just need to give them a big tug
Or it may be that you have the black steel wheels with the chromed rims. The rims are chromed so are part of the wheel and will not come off.

Can you post a picture?

John, just as Brian says, I don't think it's possible to avoid scratching the paint. The damn things just have "teeth" which grip the wheel and you remove them the same way you would a paint can lid. I've actually decided not to fit mine back on after having the wheels powdercoates as I simply can't stomach scraping them.

The best I can do by a search on the net is this photo. There are a lot of pictures of the more modern replacement which seem to have a different teeth design (I wonder if they are kinder to the paint). Unfortunately my car is stored 20 min away so I can't take photos of my own. I can't really imagine how you would get anything under the teeth as they are designed to grip only one way and dig into the paint if pulled... Good luck.

Jason,

I have never heard of such a wheel however it does seem like a great solution. Does such a wheel exist? Has anyone had the very edge of their steel wheels chromed?

John, the wheel has probably been scratched anyway when they were put on. So to get the wheels checked out, you will be removing the rims each time anything is done to any of the other 4. The question is do you keep the rims on or repaint and not use them at all.
Now I am just guessing about the scratched wheels, maybe they have rubber protectors on the gripping parts. ??

In the late 60's I had 5.5" J wheels made by Rubery-Owen for my S2SE, and herecy I know, but they looked so much better than the originals.
