Lower Arm Fouling Rim.

Hi Everyone.

I've just fitted a new set of alloys to my '69 +2 from Matty's. these are fitted with 175-70s. the suspension set up is standard using GAZ struts. however the lower A frame arm is fouling the rim on both sides.

the original steel rims leave approx 5mm clearance.

is this simply the fact that alloys have to be casted thicker? or is it down to work done to poor tolerances?

i can grind 2mm off the point of contact to make the arm clear but this is not the ideal solution.

Any clues?

Grinding the corner of the arms is the only fix. Well documented in this forum. Do a search and you will find some pictures that will give you a good idea of what is required.

I'm sure Matty will send you a sketch of exactly what to do.

I seem to remember seeing arms at TTR with the corners already removed.

Actually it is the only fast and inexpensive fix. Spyder makes replacement arms for the Elan and +2 with camber adjustable by spherical rod ends at the outboard ends. These arms provide much more clearance to the wheel. The thickness of the alloy rim is the root of the problem.

AHHGHH there goes the galvanizing... at least it's an easy fix.

The first time I put Panasport alloys on my car, I backed out of the garage to go for a run. The corner of the outboard retaining bolt head machined a groove on the inside of the wheel. Careful clocking of the hex head provided enough clearance to eliminate the problem.
