Wheel peg holes

PostPost by: Gasman » Thu Nov 02, 2006 6:52 pm

Dear all

Following a recent posting I checked my wheels and one was quite loose. In fact it had done a fair bit of damage to the peg hole. This has got me wondering how tight a fit these are ment to be I seem to have good and not so good.

Can these be repaired by welding? or is the only solution new wheels?

Comments awaited
Cheers
Mark

Can't really tell from the photos but are you saying that the peg holes are now flared ?
If that's the case then do what I did.Get a hammer, punch, and a bit of steel for an anvil and knock them back down.
Sounds a bit crude but worked fine. Used a piece of steel rod the same diameter as a peg as a test piece to ensure I didn't over do it.
The pegs were grooved also so worth having a good look at them as they are no big deal to replace.

Ralph.

The pictures are of the wheels I still have on, both of which have very slight movement in a rotational direction if the spinner is hand tight, which dissapears when the spinner is hammered round with wooden block and copper mallet.
I don't know if any movement is acceptable as I think this is what has loosened the spinner when the wheel, I have now removed, got damaged.

I will give it a good hammering 'cos it sound theraputic if nothing else and replace dodgey peg.

I believe a little play is ok but very little, the peg holes should be snug ...a bit of Jack and Jill here. No splines so the pegs hold fore and aft forces. If they wiggle, the SECURING nut can be unscrewed a tad, then a tad more... let's ask Colin about this one...and mention the part about wheel center reaming/securing nut torque.
Does anyone know of another car with this design? The Nader nuts on my steel wheeled +2 can loosen after the car sits still. Is it a heat transfer thing?

I thought the threads on elan spinners were so handed that, under braking(the stronger of the two rotational forces),they would self-tighten if anything.Or was this wishful thinking!!
