I have just foundout how to tell when a tyre was manufactured.
There are 4 numbers after the "DOT" symble eg 3105 it is the 31st week in 2005,if there are 3 numbers eg 318 it is 31st week in 1998.
The recomendations are that tyres be scraped after 5 years??? and it could be made an MOT fail in the future

Maybe a Lotus is an MOT failure in the future...

If it helps the new UK MOT system has an input for vehicle weight at the brake test stage. Mine was the lightest car by far input at my centre and registered upper 90's for efficiency. It might be worth stressing the cars weight to the tester so they don't input 1,000 kilos which is likely to be their guess.
