14x6 Minilite Wheels

PostPost by: steveww » Tue Aug 23, 2005 4:50 pm

I use these tyres on the road as well as the track and so far so good. They are of course rather soft so I do not expect to get too many miles out of them. However I anly do about 3k miles a year in the Elan so this is not a problem for me.

Have measured the offset on my 14 x 6 rims at 100mm from a straight edge across the rim to the machined face mating to the hub. On my old steel wheels it is 90mm.

Hope this helps.

On the brake issue I guess we all have different points of view and stay with whatever works for you.

cheers Hew

100mm is the same back space as the 5 x 13 minilites that I use. These clear the suspension bits OK but you need small diameter springs fitted or the tyres will rub the bottom spring platforms.

Kieth --Ive managed 80mph plus on a paved country road corner that is similar to turn 1 at Mosport near here with no trauma--- [ now I have to find another test track in case officer Bob is on line]--Hankooks are a street radial used by the f Ford guys here to reduce racing costs and its way too much tire for them---good for a 1400 pound car though -- use 30 pounds all around -- not so good in the wet --- ed :D

The "Minilite" wheel saga has been covered quite comprehensively in the recent past, in the "Club Lotus News"; there was even a concluding statement from Minilite themselves.
Prior to supplying minilite wheels, "Spy-er" were selling 14"x6" "Superlite" wheels & recomended fitting them with 185/60x14" Yokohamas for my S4.
I had a set sent to me & found that the 185's rubbed on the rear wheel arches.
A bit of grinding on the inside of the wheel arches and the fitting of 175's resolved the problem.
(Didn't get much back on the resale of the unused Yoko's, sob sob!!)
I have seen a couple of other S4's with "Superlite" wheels fitted with 185's. I was unable to get to speak to the owners however.
It would appear that they do work on some S4's but it didn't work for me.
The 6" rim width does, as mentioned earlier in this thread, need the fitting of smaller diameter rear springs. I used 2 1/4" on adjustable height platforms.
Just another twist to the story.
Good luck.

I've made the Minilite folks aware of the dire tire situation as far as 13" wheels go. Made a plea for a 14 x 5" wheel for all the baby Elans owners to use. Haven't heard back from them yet. Not getting my hopes up.

Hello Gents - S3 1967 in UK, chassis-up rebuild - picking up on this old thread I need some feedback on my effort to use original (40+yrs old) Minilite 5x13 with 3/4 offset, bolt-on. The wheel inside rim corner, catches the Aframe and needs a 5mm spacer on the hub, but then pushing the wheel further outboard, I'm worried about hitting inside the wheelarch (can't check just now as the body is off for a strip n paint amd if I need to flare it slightly thats got to get done before repainting..
I see lots of chat about tyre size from which I gather 13×175/70 is a likely choice, but not much info about wheel off-set without which tyre sizes are meaningless.
I'm not race/rally but need a usable road result. What's my options please? Thx PeteE
