Avon CR6ZZ tires

Hi All,

I am looking for tires for my '72 Sprint. The previous owner was running Yokohama 175-60-13 on 5-inch rims.

It is impossible to get high-performance Yoko's in the US, and the "60" size sidewalls do not look good on the car (to me anyway).

The Avon CR6ZZ tires come in 175-70-13 and 185-70-13 sizes. They are described as high-performance street tires that can be used on the track for track days.

Has anyone used the Avon CR6ZZ in the 175-70-13 or 185-70-13 sizes, and if so what has your experience been?

These are the recommended and most used tires on the sixties series (FIA period F) of a number of races in continental Europe, and if I have not yet used them on an elan, they perform rather well on an E type (pretty good grip on the dry, quite decent on the wet, can do about 4-6 of racing hours with the Jag hich is decent - and look vintage).

avon tyres are great on my +2 . handle very well and would have them again.
I remember one particular track day, some years ago now, ( with lots of hard cornering & braking) .Many folk were having trouble with their tyres but the Avons were great ... I still have the same tyres on the car now .

Do you have flares on your Sprint? Otherwise, I think the 185/70's are going to be problematic in terms of fitting.

I have 185/60's (Toyo R888R) on my S4, no flares, and they just fit. I also had to add steering rack limiters to avoid fouling the ARB. I have 5" wide r13 wheels (26r replicas).

Note, the 185/60's, while they are 60's profile, fill the wheel openings better than the 175/60's do.

I should also note that when I had 175/70's on my car I fouled the top of the wheel arch in the front on full lock and driving into a dip (like into a driveway - slow speed). Ended up cracking out the the fiberglass on the wheel arch top (ouch).

At Tire Rack, it says that the Toyo R888R's are for the track only. Do you use them on the road?

Yes, I do use the Toyo R888R tires on the street.

They are D.O.T. legal for the street. The reason TireRack indicates these as race/autocross only is as stated later on their site:

"Proxes R888R radials are not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice. It's also essential these tires be stored indoors at temperatures maintained above 15 degrees F."

and

"While Proxes R888R radials meet D.O.T. requirements, they are not recommended for driving in wet conditions when shaved or worn where standing water is present and there is a risk of hydroplaning. Drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds if they encounter these conditions."

My Elan is not a daily driver and really only driven on dry days. (My top (hood) has not been up since 1983). When I did encounter some puddles and dampness, the tires, albeit new, were fine.

The tires provide impressive handling and with my high power engine (181hp and 143 torque) and limited slip (actually an ATB, Quaife) really deliver acceleration without spinning the wheels.

I suspect I won't get that many miles from the Toyos but given my requirements I am OK with that.

Note the cracked fiberglass was from the previous 175/70 tires that I mentioned in my previous post. Haven't fixed yet. On both sides. Been there a while since the car was off the road for 13 years until recently. Current tires (185/60) are OK and do not hit the arches. The rear clearances are very tight. I shaved a few mm off one side inner lip - the other side was OK (Lotus asymmetry). I do have firmer springs now and adjustable perches. Running about 5.5" to the sill (instead of 6").

what about these Pirelli Cinturato CN36 https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/catalo ... gory/8918/

They are the best road tyre in this size for a classic car. I know there are more modern tyres in this size, but they won't compliment the Elan so well
