Wheel and tyre comparison

PostPost by: sabbot » Tue Dec 19, 2017 3:45 am

I finally got around to adding rubber to a set of 13? 5 spoke knock-on alloys from Dave Bean. I had assumed that the alloys (with 175 section tyres) would be heavier than the original steel rims with 155 tyres but in fact the alloy rim and tyre combination weighed in 1/2 lb lighter at 26.5lbs. Also it?s nice when the diameter calculations to match the 155/80 to 175/70 work out in practice.

That looks like the Revolution alloys that I have, except that mine have no black paint.

I've generally found with "ordinary" cars with a standard full size steel spare and alloys on the road wheels, that the alloys weigh slightly more than the steel wheel, but that's when the tyres are all the same size.

That does indeed look like the Revolution 5 spoke that I have.

Have you had a chance to fit the wheels and tires to your elan and if so how did it go. Did you have any clearance problems with the 175-70-13's

I am interested in the outcome as well. I'm facing tire replacement soon.

I need to replace my tires and am having a very hard time finding something appropriate. I have 4.5" wide 13" pin drive wheels and would like to stay close to original sizing. There doesn't seem to be much in 155/13 or in 175/13, so what are people using these days?
