Thanks David.
I don't understand 0.675. I meant side to side. Diameter flat to flat and point to point.

Sorry, my mistake. I meant the single central nut.

I'm designing a simple tool for use on the winged nut and I'm pondering on the possibility of making it so it fits both winged and "safety". What I don't know is the dimensions of the single nut. Hence the post.

Or are you talking about one of the Knock on spinners for the US market?

Thanks anyway David.
My fault I should have written "spinner".

A socket for the octagonal nuts is available from RD Enterprises in the US: http://www.rdent.com.

The hexagonal nut is 63.5 mm A/F and 69.5 mm across points. I have a scrap one which you could borrow if you wish?
If I decide it is viable I'll be in touch. Many thanks.

Doesn't a socket risk damaging the chrome finish?

A steel socket is likely to marr the chrome finish over time although less so than the tools cut from relatively thin steel plate that Lotus supplied originally. Are you thinking of a heavy wall socket machined from brass or another relatively soft material?

Measuring my original k/o wrench shown below:
2.56 to 2.61 inches across flats
2.76-2.77 across points.
Jibes with the measurements of the spinner given in the earlier post (2.5 (63.5 mm) and 2.73(69.5mm) inches with some clearance.
As far as damage, I notice some light chrome damage in some areas on the 48 year old "Nader Nuts". But generally the wrench really didn't cause much damage. I was always careful to take any "slack" out of the wrench/spinner fit before hitting the wrench with the hammer. A socket would be much nicer as you have a real measure of the torque applied. But, I never had any problems with loose wheels.

See the prototype of what I might make below.
10 mm steel plate. with 3 off 13mm pins welded at 75mm centres.
2mm neoprene "cover" stretched over the pins to protect the "hub".
Held in place with 1/2 inch plastic tube to protect the spinners.
Gurt big hub nut welded on the other side.
