wheel bearing adjustment

I have cleaned and repacked my front hub and bearings. I installed the rear seal with the felt washer facing out and placed the hub onto the stub axle. When i fit the outer bearing and washer and tighten the castle nut I cannot get the hub to get stiff or bind. I dont want to tighten the nut too heavily.
What is going on? I did notice that the metal lip of the seal is slightly proud of the top of the hub. I have several now seals which have a smaller lip than the seal that is presently on the hub.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bob

As you mention the seal consists of the metal ring with the felt insert. I seem to recall that not all replacement seals have the correct size metal ring. I got around the problem by separating the felt from the new seal and combining it with the old seals metal ring.
It worked for me.

That is interesting. I have a new set of seals.
The height or thickness of the metal cup differ on each set. The set I have installed is taller than the new set. What was the primary dimensional difference from the original?
I may have the original buried in bins of old +2 parts.

Bob,
I am not sure how having the wrong seal would prevent you from tightening the castellated nut enough to cause drag or binding. Could there be a burr on the thread of the stub axle that is keeping the nut from running in far enough? I suggest that because you said you didn't want to tighten the nut too much (I wouldn't want to either).

The threads are fine.
I will have to look closely tomorrow. Could be the felt ring is not positioned around the hub properly. I will try removing the felt and then assembling. Possibly I may have to position the felt ring before the hub is offered to the spindle.

Hi Bob,
Sounds to me like the washer may be bottoming out on the shoulder of the stub axle before contacting the bearing. I seem to recall that my washers had a chamfer on the inner diameter on one side, if yours are the same check you've fitted them with the chamfer on the inside - towards the bearing.
