New Tires

PostPost by: Ianashdown57 » Fri Dec 09, 2011 8:39 am

Sorry! I hate to bring up this subject again, but I'm looking for some opinions.

Does anyone have any experience with Achilles Platinum tires? I was advised a while ago that they were OK to use, in the appropriate size, for a Europe TC and they apparently make a 155/70 13 which would fit my S1 quite nicely I think.

Failing that, what about Falken Sincera in the same size. I'd have to bring them from the UK so who know's if they'd be legal strictly speaking, but I'm sure I could get away with it no problem.

Any opinions or thoughts?

Thanks,

Ian

Sorry, maybe I was un-clear. I'm looking for 155-13". 175's are not so difficult to find, but 155's are getting a bit scarce. I had a good recomendation on the Achilles and wondered if anyone else had any input.
Thanks

One thing you can do, is go to the nhtsa.gov web site, look under complaints and see if there have been any logged against the tires. China is flooding the tire market here, since the tariffs have been dropped.

It's also a good reference if you are looking for a car, new or used. The dirty laundry seems to turn up there.

not sure if (decent) 13" tyres are as hideously expensive in the USA as Australia but I just imported a set of Yokohama A048 tyres from Demon Tweaks in the UK and even with the freight they were substantially cheaper than buying them here.

Tire Rack has the Kumho Solus for $48 per tire.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Kumho&tireModel=Solus+KR21&partnum=58TR3KR21

and Discount Tire has the SA4 which I have on my S2 Elan and have put over 5,000 mile on with great result and that tire is even less at $39 each.

Now I know the purists will say these are only S rated but I still contend they are better than any tire available in 1965 at any price and the SA4 which is a Chinese no name tire has been great for my cross country trips and track days in my Elan. The enemy of tires is time and ozone. I feel safer with newer Chinese no name tires than 10 year old Dunlop SP41 tires, and can afford to replace them every couple of years long before tread wears out and before aging is an issue. Just my $.02.

What size A048 will fit an Elan?

Herb

I have a S2 with 26R guards fitted so probably different to what will fit a standard Elan.

I have Panasport 13 x 6 with 175/60/13 at the front and 185/60/13 at the rear and plenty of room

I have Bridgestone 165x70x13 on stardard rims on my S4 with no drama - purchased off the shelf from the local tyre dealer.

I have the Kumho Solis 155/80-13 and they seem fine. I have not put a lot of miles on them yet, and my Elan had been off the road for quite a while, so I am not quite sure how well they compare to the Dunlop/Sumitomo SP-4 tires that came off the car. But they really seem fine, and I have bought tires that have not seemed fine (for other cars, not my Elans)

+1 on the Kumho Solus in 155, on my Elan S3 Coupe. No room for wider tires without being lower profile. After the first few hundred miles, grip improved and they do pretty well. Not high performance tires, but there is so little remaining in this size the options are sparse.
Cheers,
Greg

I wish the A048s were available in the US in 13 inch. I have a set of A032Rs sitting in the garage for when the current set goes away (probably next autocross). I'll have to remember the possibility of ordering from the UK when I need tires next. The selection in 13 inch these days is pretty worthless.
