Goodyear A.70 tires

PostPost by: gjz30075 » Thu Oct 13, 2011 7:51 pm

Does anyone know the real size of A.70 tires mentioned in the shop manual for speedo gear references? An S4/Sprint stock size would be 155s but they'd be 80 series. I'm guessing the A.70 is a 70 series size but how about the width? 155/70 perhaps? A quick measurement of a 165/70 is roughly 1/4 inch less than the 155/80, so before I confuse myself further, any ideas?
Thanks,

Pete,
It's actually " No wuckers", short for " No wucking forries" (meaning: "You're welcome"). Move the first letters around and you'll get the drift!
Cheers,
Colin.

Greg,
155x13 aspect ratio is 82 (155/82x13), not 80.
If you look here: http://vw.zenseeker.net/Wheels-TireSizing.htm
nearly at the bottom there is a comparison chart. Looks like an A.70 x 13 tyre would be 175/70x13 in a modern tyre. There is also a tyre calculator where you can enter data for 155/82x13 and 175/70x13 and compare. They are very similar in overall diameter.
Cheers,
Colin.

Tyres not showing the aspect ratio can vary between 80 and 82%. In addition, the width of the rim has an effect on running diameter. To confuse things even further, the section width designation is only nominal!! The difference between aspect ratios of 80 and 82% for a nominal 155 tyre on a 13 inch rim is 1%. I very much doubt the speedometer is more accurate than that anyway!

Well, that clears things up then, mates. I didn't realize then that the factory would actually acknowledge a 175/70 to be an optional fit, as we, the aftermarketeers, knew then.
Thanks!
