Bolt-On Wheel bearings

PostPost by: sonunet » Mon Jul 05, 2010 3:25 pm

I've done quite a few searches and have come up short. the Cross reference on GG's parts cross reference indicates an Outer Cup Reference number of: Timken 03961 Cup - but the bearing shop here locally (whistler bearing - no affiliation) indicated that that's not a valid part number. does anyone have a valid part number for an outer Bolt-on wheel hub cup for a '65 Baby Elan?

the outer hub size accepts an O.D of a cup roughly @ 1.77"

btw - the Bearing / Cone that i'm using is: Timken 03062 Cone

tkx for your help

Robinshaw/Ross says:

Inner bearing race: 07100S
Inner bearing journal: 07210X
Outer bearing race: 03062
Outer bearing journal: 03162

(all Timken part nos)

If in doubt they're for Triumph Herald (disc brake version) or Spitfire.

i had purchased the 03162 TIMKEN CUP, but it's too small. see the photos - the Cup O.D. is: 1.625 and holding a caliper upto the Hub - the I.D. is: ~ 1.77

any advice on this would be great.

Just for reference, can you measure the major and minor diameters of your stub axle (ie the journals for inner and outer races)?

I just measured my S1 bolt-on hub and it's ~1.6".

I also measured a Vitesse hub (also bolt-on, but using the larger stub axle, the same as the knock-ons) and the I.D. is ~1.8".

Is there any chance your hubs were replaced at any point?

Call Dave Bean and talk with Tom Smith or Ken Gray. The number is 209 754-5802 and ask them.
If you have a 5/8 inch cone with the 3/4 inch race then you either have to read the part number from
the old race or find out what you have. The outer bearing you gave is the 5/8 inch cone, the outer
race diameter is the GT6 hub, it is also the knock off hub bearing diameter. Check that the inner
cone actually fits on the stub axle. I have GT6 uprights and stub axles on my S2 Elan. I didn't look up
the diameter of the bearings until after I posted my reply. take a look at the Dave Bean page below.
Also while talking with them order the Elan Catalog and the English Ford Racers Catalog too,
both catalogs has a lot of good info that you need to get things done on your Elan.

I'll email you a link that may be helpful.

all, thanks for all of your help. i think what i have are GT6 hubs ( which i got cleaned up and powder-coated :( ) - and the bolt-on (standard Spitfire) uprights. I'm in the process of exchanging out the K/O assembly to the Bolt-Ons. what i might do is disassemble the old K/O's that i have. Clean up the upright and stub axle; then mix and match using the K/O upright, stub axle meshed with the GT6 Hubs.

btw - in the process of a nut and bolt restore of a '65 - Type 26

The following combination should work fine:

- Elan knock-on upright and stub axle;
- GT6 bolt-on hub and bearing;
- Elan caliper bracket, disc/rotor and caliper (knock-on and bolt-on are the same)

The exact same combination was used on the Vitesse 1.6.

S,

Your problem is that your Elan needs to grow up! None of us have "baby" Elans. I see your Elan is a Series 2, a much more descriptive term. Ugh Christoper Neal, see what you've started.
