Torque figures for three eared wheel nut

PostPost by: seaandmoor » Sun Dec 14, 2008 7:00 pm

I've been looking through the Elan plus 2 manual and can't find anywhere any reference to the torque to which the knock on wheel nuts should be tightend up to.

Does anyone have the correct torque either in lbs/ft or Nm/M

Thanks

I tighten mine to about 200 lb ft, and I've not had any problems

Lotus Elan workshop manual
X036T0327Z
October 1972
page 27 of technical data under HUBS

Wheel Nuts (octagonal) 160 - 180 lb.ft. 22.12 - 24.88 kg.m.

Gary

p.s. 200 lb/ft sounds ok too

On my torque wrench I have a mark at 12" onto which I put my 200lb weight.

Very simple (that's me) formula for tightening my wheels.

Oh trust you to get so bloody technical.
Can you put a table together for different body weights?
Surely the 3 eared nuts on here weigh a bit more that the 2 eared nuts like myself

Hello again seaandmoor,
I did not see this post until now. But I originally asked that same question and someone in the UK said 160 to 180 was right but I was not able to find it again when I was printing instructions. My owners manual said 200 to 220 for the octagonal spinner was right. Gary Anderson has found it again. Thanks! I have been using 200 without any problems. I am not sure why there would be any difference due to the spinner design. My business and vendors Listings site addresses my story on torque. I still check them every so often and I do get some movement some times keeping them at 200 ft/lb. of torque.
I use a 25 inch, 250 lb, reversible, half inch drive, Craftsmen torque wrench, it take the quest work out of it.

Whatever the books say, the actual number can't be all that important - after all, we're officially supposed to smash 'em on tight with a bloody great lead hammer! Difficult to get a precise torque setting using that technique. :D

Seandmoor, A little story that involved Mike Ostrov and his Lotus Elites type 14. I used my two eared knockoff spinner tool and my torque wrench and he used an old lead hammer. With that old hammer, he hit 210 ft/lbs. of torque every time. On my web site there is a link to a Elite newsletter that Mike was a part of that dealt with torque. Its on the service page.

"he hit 210 ft/lbs. of torque every time".

He was probably listening.
The "donk, donk, donk" gets harder and sharper when they get tight.

Well, you notice it when you've done it often enough.
Haven't split any wheels or had any come loose yet.

Still time though....

Ralph.
