3 wheels on my wagon

PostPost by: RobCapper » Sun Apr 29, 2007 5:24 pm

interesting evening on Friday... a nasty noise at the back got slowly worse, so I pulled over... and my passenger side rear wheel was 3 turns of the wheel from being off.... the wheel is scrapped to buggery and goodness knows if anything else is damaged. On jacking it up and taking it off, 3 lugs fell off the hub (new wheels, well looked after car). Bit of a headache as to why it worked lose... also - anyone know the price of a rear hub for a +2?

grr.... :(

You didn't say if your wheels where aluminium or steel. Steel ones rarely come loose unless you forget to tighten them or someone has been trying to loosen it for what ever reason!! If the hubs are on the wrong side ie left on right and vice versa, they will come loose. RH threads on RH side and LH threads on LH side. It is very important not to mix them. The correct thread on each side will automatically stay tight once tightened.

Aluminium wheels are different in that they don't have a conical hole in the wheel centre but a flat face.

Wheel nuts between steel and aly wheels are not interchangeable .

can you just fit new lugs? I mean I could, certainly, weld the old lugs back into the hub.. .I just thought it might be better to get a new hub?

they're alloys - the s130 type... don't see how I could've mixed the wheels around at all?

I had problems with wheels coming loose until I found out that you are not supposed to grease the threads. ( On this forum).
I have had no problems since cleaning the grease off.

"Wheel nuts between steel and aly wheels are not interchangeable"

Robinshaw and Ross say that they have different cone angles and those for the GKN wheels were marked for alloyuse only.

Can anyone confirm for sure that this was reallly the case, since I have never seen any three eared spinners that are marked for alloy use only or two, each with a different cone angle??

Rob,

This had happened to me a couple of times over the years mainly due to wheels not been tightened enough The lugs or drive pegs are are a press fit in the hub and easily replaced and are not expensive, it will depend on if the holes for the pegs are damaged whether you need to change the hub, how ever in my experience the cast hub holes are tougher than the steel drive pegs and how they are fitted

Also the alloy wheel locating holes will need inspection to check if they have been damaged and that they can mate with the pegs securly

If these wheels are a new fitment to your car that have previous steel wheels then you would want check the wheel nuts are the right ones, are they knock on or bolt on ?
