Steering Rack Clamps

The rack clamps on my Plus 2 are tending to be pulled off the rubbers as they are tightened due to the fact that the U-bolt is so far offset from the rubber. I notice that the clamps supplied by SJ have extension pieces that mine don't. It would appear to me that these legs would prevent the clamp from tilting as it tries to compress the rubber so keeping it square,, is this correct ?. Is this a later modification ?.
