Steering wheel spoke cracked

PostPost by: pimkeirle » Thu Feb 12, 2015 5:44 pm

One of the spokes on my much loved +2 steering wheel has fractured across the hole nearest to the hub. It's an original wheel, leather covered and otherwise in good condition. Does anyone know if it is possible to have something like this welded and if so, if it produces a neat enough job to make it 'good as new' once it has been re-painted.

I would take the wheel to a specialist welding company for a quote.
If you look for a company that specialises in "TIG" welding this should represent no problem at all.
A really good weld should be prepared with a "V" to get the depth of weld penetration required...
(preferably on the reverse side) it's then possible to machine off the excess weld to leave a strong, smooth joint - furthermore if it's an aerospace firm they may also use crack detect methods to ensure that it's as strong as possible. If the wheel is painted after the welding there should be little to give the repair away.

Good luck :D
