Steering Wheel - Elan? Europa?

PostPost by: ElliottN » Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:18 am

I acquired a steering wheel which will fit my Elan but is obviously not for an Elan - there are 2 pins set in the boss which must be to cancel the indicators on the car it came from. A Europa I suspect? Can anyone confirm (see photo - it's not great but you can make out the 2 pins if you look carefully).
thanks

I have the same steering wheel and wondered its use. Here is the response I got from Len Chandler who restores steering wheels in the UK.

This wheel is a late S4 Elan steering wheel and would fit 70's Europa . The two pin's are for cancelling a turn signal.

Strange, I have a Sprint (which I assume has the same Triumph steering column with Triumph indicator and light switches as an S4) and there is a little metal clip fixed to the steering column itself to cancel the indicators and nothing on the steering wheel...

It's not from a +2 is it?

Lotus changed to the later style wheel sometime around 1971 I think. Early sprints had the earlier style wheel, later sprints, plus 2s 130 and Europas of the era all had the later style wheel.

As with all things Lotus the change over dates will not be consistent.
