Steering rack

PostPost by: sk178ta » Fri Oct 20, 2006 3:58 pm

So, with a tiny bit of play in my steering rack I bought a re-manufactured one for Herald, Vitesse, Spitfire etc. Lock to lock it turns over 4 times whereas the one on the Elan is about 2 and a half turns lock to lock. I know the spacer thingy reduces the turns (and the lock) but does it reduce it that much?

Hi Jim. How's things in your new abode ? :D

Yes, there's a spacer tube one end and an extra spacer welded to a nut on the other end. The result should be 2 and 2/3 turns for an Elan, and a bit more for a +2 I believe. Without it, the wheels can touch the body/antiroll bar/etc on full lock with disastrous results...

Most of the racks I have dismantled seem to have home-made looking versions of the spacers, although that could be how they were !

Best wishes :)

Thanks Matt, that seems most likely. Can anyone else corroborate this?
New abode is in a brilliant spot but short on garaging. I`m no longer Capt. Hargate, now Capt. Yoghurt...........from Frogggatt !!

Section H page 10 of the later 1970 workshop manual ( 36 / T327) has a diagram showing the dimensions of the spacers and the rest of the rack that should enable you to set up your new rack correctly
