How to stop steering pivot point play?

Isn't this perhaps the reason why there is a small blanking plug which is supposed to be removed and then a grease nipple put in for greasing purposes after which the nipple is removed and the plug screwed back in? I was wondering why a grease nipple couldn't just be left in place permanently.

You can fit one but it needs to come out at 90 degrees to the hole otherwise you can't get the grease / oil gun on it

Grease nipple: Left mine in for 26 years (with rubber nipple covers), no problem with grease gun.

Gerry,
As the hole in a standard v link is .28in you could always buy an undrilled link and drill a smaller hole, say .125in. You could then use the standard method of lubrication.
Cheers

Hi all and thank you very much for all the information which have provided.

I have followed all the advice as to what and how to check etc and concluded that it was the front passenger side top ball joint (if only the MoT man could've told me that!)
Got new ball joint from Sue Miller - arrived in less than 24 hours - Hurrah for Sue again!

MoT passed with only small cost of ball joint - Result!
Thanks again to all.
