Steering wheel center cap

PostPost by: prezoom » Mon Dec 09, 2024 4:27 pm

Simple question for an overly cautious mind. I have a need to remove the steering wheel from my 1972 Plus2. The manual says too pry the horn cap off to remove. Have applied medium pressure to the point of deforming the plastic to no avail, but I am cautious of applying more pressure for fear of damaging the cap. Any help here would be gratuitously accepted.

Hi
Try prizing fron more than one point 180 degrees apart.
It will come off.
Good luck

Which wheel and horn push is fitted to your car? Makes a difference to how they are removed.

Post a picture Rob.

Leslie,

I wish I could post a picture however, being firmly mired in yestertech, my old cell phone is not compatible with my computer as it has a rotary dial and a crank on the side. I believe I could describe the horn cap as large in diameter as shown in the worshop manual. The car was the last Plus2 imported to the US.

I think we are talking about this style of Badge:
IMG_7122.jpg and

The badge should be just a push fit onto the later style Horn Push:

This is a Sprint wheel, but the horn push assembly is the same.

The badge should just prise off, the assembly looks like this:

HornBadge_Off.jpg and

And for those of you that are interested, here is the whole later style horn push system modelled:

When I have the time I was planning on adding a fault finding / solution posting...

Phil,

A bit of topic creep, what is that round thing in your door? Shown just to the left of your steering wheel.

It's a tweeter (small speaker). My car was renovated by a music producer on Vancouver Island & has a high end stereo system (that I rarely turn on.)

A bit more of topic creep,

Phil

One might also ask what that strange thing is on the dashboard between the rev counter and the fuel gauge?

We really are creeping... It's a microphone for my telephone (connected to the radio by cable & to my 'phone by Bluetooth). I can use my telephone hands free...

My car has a column mounted ignition lock so I used the hole in the dash where the ignition lock was mounted on earlier cars to mount the mic.

Hope the OP has the info they were after...

Thanks Phil,
I initially thought it would be like my S2, but could not find a seam between the horn push and the base. Did not want to start jamming sharp objects to try to find the seam and make a mess of the thing. First step will be to find a pair of "cheaters", as it seems my bifocals are not up to the task. Subtile hint it is time to get my eyes examined again. Getting old............sigh.

Hi There

Try using your finger nails to get behind the badge first, it shouldn't be too tight. I'd recommend that before using anything metal. Once the badge has been removed you'll access to tne steering column nut

Phil,

Thank you, I am most impressed. My phone is an antique. I am so frightened of door trim I would only remove and refit if the work was essential.

You can buy plastic trim removal tools, which are far kinder to plastics, vinyl etc. It is also very useful for our modern cars, where so many bits of plastic need to be removed for all sorts of access to fuses, light bulbs and so on.

I keep a set in my tool kit and it is amazing how often I use them, even on the Elan.

All,
Managed to get a fingernail to catch the edge, and pop it off. Thanks to everyone.
