Bronze steering column bushes

Bought a couple of replacement bushes for the column on my Elan sprint and as I pushed the inner column through the bush the plastic sleeve came away- not good .
The original bushes are different to what is now supplied and they have a lip in the rubber to stop the plastic sleeve migrating-
Replacement ones have a pip on the plastic sleeve but it is brittle .
Made two new ones in bronze and secured them with dome head Allen bolts through the existing rubber pip holes.
Not tried it on the road yet but it feels nice - with no play - bit like the lotus seven.

I was just wondering about something like this the other day as I saw how much my inner shaft moves having only just replaced the bushes.

It seems that Rimmer Bros has an "uprated version" of the bush. Not sure if that would be any good or what it's made of.

I'm very interested in your results.

My rubber bushes were bought from paul matty , can only think an updated bush would be stiffer .
Should have the Elan on the road in a couple of weeks - my only concern would be vibration through the steering wheel but I'll just have to try it .

Have used these, solid PTFE , I think, search for uprated Triumph steering column bush.

They look like a better job - may be more difficult to fit but would have gave them a go if they had been to hand.

The bronze bush is easily fitted and removed as the rubber isn't there to get a hold on the column

No Jon - just the bushes out of necessity!
Does your engine have std cams ?

The car has a slightly lumpy tickover (QED 360 cams timed on verniers) which I don't mind - like in fact. The carbs are however very rich at idle with a slight stumble on take up and there are no air bleed screws so I think a lot can be done. They're not properly balanced choke to choke so I think Boggies will be able to make some big improvements.

I think we all have the same problem with new column bushes being slack. I did not want to risk possibly creating vibration with solid bushes, so had my column hard chrome plated, and then ground to fit the bush.
