Steering column bracket to dashboard

PostPost by: AussieJohn » Sat Dec 17, 2011 10:30 am

A friend is rebuilding an S4 and has a query. The bracket [which is held to the dash with 3 bolts] is not flat across the surface that meets the dash; where the top large bolt fits the bracket appears to need a spacer of about 2 mill. Is there another bracket or spacer missing, cheers, John.

AJ,
While not specifically answering your question this thread may be of interest.

I think they are all like that, never seen a washer/plate inserted. Maybe the design thought was that the bracket would be mounted/sandwiched. The bracket and dashboard as bread and the fiberglass as the meat . I don't know.

I believe it's a Lotus part...(sourced from where the door hinge castings came from p'raps?)

At least I can't see it on here:

I too think Lotus, i have had a couple GT6 and the column clamp was different. there are no identifying marks or trade marks, just a nicely die cast part

Im just about to fit my dash and I must admit it seemed to me as if the fibreglass should go between the bracket and the dash at the top

It did not appear to originally on my S3 .....well there was no hole, but the new dash had been fitted badly and when I got everything in line the fibre glass half went accross the mounting.

Mines a very early S1 so who knows, Ive hqd to make a new crash pad anyway but it looked as if the old one was trapped by the clamp/dash

the above link has some photos of 26/4997 (LHD) when it was disassembled 15 years ago. specifically the removal of the dash.

26/4020 body also LHD

This is an S4 LHD coupe (bitsa) 36/9686 without any hint of the fiberglass mounting tabs, by this time the dashed had the crush bushes and threaded bobbins for the dashboard 5/16 unc screws bonded into the body.

Look in the upper right, I even reassembled it with the fiberglass as the meat between the dashboard and bracket :D funny how it sometimes works out...

Thanks for the photos Gary, maybe early cars had a tab which was deleted later, cheers, John.

Hi

Fitted a new dash to mine no tab and no fibre 'meat'. For once all lined up and bolts went in no trouble.

Now door rods and clips and things are a total pain

Michael

Lotus Elan Sprint ( just need the windscreen fitted and 'finished')
