Clearance for shims in steering pinion

PostPost by: Lincoln62 » Sun May 01, 2011 5:06 am

While I have my steering rack out I am checking all the clearances.

Both my workshop manuals say to measure the pinion end float (without shims) with a dial gauge. Then sufficient shims need to be added to give minimal end float but free rotation of the pinion shaft.

It doesn't specify a clearance (it specifies .004" for the thrust pad though). Why did it require me to measure the end float then not specify a clearance? My end float is .052" and the shims I have measure .048".

Could it be that the clearance for the pinion is .004" as well and they forgot to put it in the manuals?

Anyone?

Hi Pete,
With only two shim thicknesses available (.010" and .004") it wouldn't always be possible to achieve an exact pre-defined clearance and that's probably why it's not specified in the manual. With your .052" gap, those shim sizes could give clearances of .002", .004" or .008". Of those I think .004" is the best to give the minimum end float consistant with free rotation of the pinion - I would leave it as it is.
Just my opinion of course, others may know better.

Thanks Roger

There wasn't anything wrong in that area when I pulled it out so my thoughts were that it was probably OK. It's always good to have a second opinion, especially one that agrees with mine.
