Heater removal.

I have removed the dash from my +2 and need to get the heater unit out as the hot/cold control seems to be seized.
How do I disconnect the water pipes from the unit? Is this done from the engine compartment (I can't even see where the hoses go it's so tight in there) or can I do it all from inside the car?

Yes, there are two hoses located at the right side lower firewall. Both hoses require removal from the heater core. Two nipples on the heater core poke through the firewall, and hoses attached with hose clamps to the nipples. IIRC the holes in the firewall are too small to pull the hoses through to the interior of the car. I have only connected the heater core hoses with the engine out, so not sure how to access the hose clamps. I can not recall if accessible from under the car? Might have to remove starter?

You checked it's not the control valve on the side of the head? - not expensive to replace.
This only applies to the elan. The plus 2 doesn't have the valve but a flap system in the heater box.
You should be able to get to the hose clamps down the rear of the engine but will be tight and a pain. I'd refit clamps with a hex head not just a screw head. Should make them a little easier to remove in the future.

..are you sure it's not the clamp on the outer sheath of the "belden cable" on the slider behind the dashboard?
you should be able to see the operation of the heater lever on the heater just by removing the under dash side trim ( left hand side )
