Heater control

PostPost by: rodlittle » Tue Jun 07, 2011 4:22 pm

This is for my S1 unit 3067
The engine has the original style winter/summer heater valve as used by ford, however the pictures in the manual seem to show a Bowden cable operated variable heater valve. Is this how it should be? it looks like at sometime in the past mine has had a rheostat fitted to control the heater motor speed instead of using a variable flow control.
Help please anyone.

Rod, I beleve the S1 is the same as the S2 which has the cable operated heater valve and a single speed fan operated by a toggle switch, the only rheostat I am aware of is the the one that dims or brightens the dash gauge lights which is also a toggle switch.

Thanks guys
I know about type26 web site the engine shot is the one out of the manual.
Looks from that like it should have the variable flow heater valve on the engine. Now the question is where do I get one
and also where do I get an operating cable and knob, anyone know what they're from

Trouble is with early elans you never quite know when things were changed in production. Why for instance would anyone have removed the variable valve from the engine and replaced it with the on/off type which were pretty standard at the time? Also the rheostat Ive got looks old enough to have been original too.

Above is a link to the correct heater control valve I believe.

I don't think heater control cables are available new, however it would be nice if all cables (bonnett, choke, heater, etc) were reproduced as many of us need replacements or don't have any at all (like me).

Here is the link to the UK ebay valve,
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Triumph-TR4-TR4A- ... 3a66ac6a73

You just have to be aware that there are two valves, the one for the Elan (opens) lets the hot water through when the cable is pulled, the other valve works the other way round letting hot water through and then closes when pulled.

Thanks Brian Ive bought one of them, id still like to know for sure that that was what was on mine originally. doesnt seem logical that the engine would have been changed back to the old ford part. suppose I'll never know
cheers

Note that it is not a Bowden cable as such. Those have a flexible inner which means they cant PUSH the valve shut (except when brand new).

The Elan cable has a solid inner (piano wire?) so it can both pull and push the valve.
