Heater fitting

Yet another dry subject for some...

I never took the car apart so have no idea how the heater fits to the dash. I have the bracket that fits it to the tunnel via the chassis bolts, but it must fit at the top too.

If anyone has any photos, and possibly brackets (I don't know if I need any yet!) please let me know

It just pushes into place with the rear of the heater box resting on a little 'shelf' for the want of a better word. Then pushing it up at the front and fitting the bracket compresses the foam seal which seals (!) it to the plenum chamber.

Sounds like you have the bracket you need.

wow, it feels exceedingly wobbly! I know I am mising the seal to link the 2 together... I am just used to things fitting rather than merely being "close"

The foam rubber seal will tighten it up. Don't use too dense a foam or you won't get the heater to fit properly. It will not go fully back into place. The dash will then contact the metal 'lugs' on the front bracket.

Dont 'bend' the dash into place. It must fit / sit onto the screw fastner lugs. Don't draw it up with the dash screws!!!

It is quite secure when all in place.

Do you have the felt under the heater box; this sits on the tunnel top, the heater box then sits on the felt. The photo is a 1967 S3 hope this helps.

Hi Guys,

Quite an interesting couple of pics those. They show the heater fitted two different ways. In the 1st pic the ''eyeball'' vent pipe rubber outlets are to the bottom or rear of the heater box.The second pic shows them exiting the front of the heater box. I had to go and check all the pics I took when stripping the car to check which way it was before I removed it. It is the same as pic 1. Vent rubber con's to the rear.

It would appear one has a choice. Which do you prefer? Manual says pic2 is correct.

Alex you've started something now ...... mine is different again ! The rubber elbows are at the back but the demister vent outlets are towards the rear on the side panels, the case is assembled the same as shown in Brian's pic but the assembly is fitted in the car the other way round. It looks right, at least in my car, as there is space provided for the tubes at the back and the proximity of the ignition switch, wiring loom, steering column and instruments would make routing the tubes from the front very difficult if not impossible. Are there any other variations out there ?

Hmmm.. Just went out and checked my car again. It is exactly the same as Roger's. Pic 3 (Bottom image) shall we say. This is how it came out and is V neat. Might try for a pic later but I don't want to take the trim off for the fun of it.

Brian might have some fun fitting the dash panel methinks. I hope not though..
