I just tried to source the part from my local VW Audi dealer. The part number is 077 906 283 B and the price is $110 (wholesale) to 150 (retail).

There are 2 alternatives.
The dash will have a round hole where the original "switch" was fitted.
In my case I filled that & the hole for the choke control with neat round switches.
One of these can be used to activate the solenoid or as I mentioned previously the solenoid can be switched on with the headlamp (lighting) switch.
However at the prices you mentioned that all remains a bit hypothetical.
Mine came courtesy of the manufacturer; no way would I pay that much.
Sorry to all concerned I didn't realise that I was leading you along a such expensive route.
Cheers

How about this one as an alternative?
Yes that'll do the job & is very similar to the valve that is presently fitted in my S4.
The stubs seem to be 6mm Dia.
This involves the use of adaptor pieces to get up to the 8mm pipes in the Elan.
Not very tidy, so another reason for my changing to the 8mm Valve
I'm hoping for a quicker reaction with 8mm stubs but cannot confirm if the increased area will in fact bring the expected improvement.
The bigger valve will also have a larger internal area so that should also be taken into account.
I'll be doing the swap sometime in Spring it's too cold to be out in the garage for too long at the moment.
Just to avoid any confusion from my above blurb; the pictured valve will do the job, IMO.
So the valve I intend to fit is a "Phaeton" bit!
That'll raise the resale value of my car
Cheers
John
