MacGregor and Rubber

Hi Jack.
Sadly, I can't find the small piece I had to check the mounting flange geometry/height and I'm not sure where the parent piece is buried. I will have a look in the next couple of days.
It was a U-shaped grabber that slipped over the inside, vertical mounting flange, with a small, soft rubber bulb attached at the crotch, IIRC. I believe the cross section was symmetrical which enabled it to be bent around the corners without kinking, unlike the original.
I looked on MacGregor's web site but didn't see any photos or diagrams of the seals. If you could post a picture of what you have, I should be able to tell you if it the same as I recall.

Bill,
Attached is a pict. of the incorrect seal, the thickness of the reinforcement is too high for the lid to sit in the correct position, as you can see I even slit the bulb part so it was more flexible. The correct one should have the bulb beside not on top of the "u" shape.

Hi Jack.
Is that the seal MacGregor gave you? It looks similar to the OEM one. I believe it is fitted backwards as shown. The flag portion should point to the outside of the trunk opening. This better keeps splashing water in the drainage trough from entering the boot cavity.
The alternate piece I got from MacGregor did not have the flag feature, but it did have a small, soft bulb centered directly on top of the U-grabber. As such, it contacted the flat portion of the boot lid, not the sloped portion.
In your case, the flag portion would touch the boot lid on the slope, preventing the lid from closing without distortion.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Bill, but actually it was fitted the reverse way from what is shown, I had removed it entirely in the fall and just set back on for the picture. The reinforced u shape is too tall, at least on my car. It binds near the front corners of the trunk lid. Yes it is what McGreggor provided, I picked it up in person at the time; I believe it is correct for the S3,4 cars.
Cheers,
Jack
