Grommet repair (of sorts)

PostPost by: JonB » Wed Dec 20, 2017 6:13 pm

Here's my bodge to close the holes in the bulkhead grommets: Bitumen backed roofing flashing. Cheap as chips.

I expect the purists will be up in arms but this should work and like I sad is cheap and easy to do. Hopefully they will not fall off in the heat of the engine bay. There's another load of flashing round the steering column and handbrake cable too. Maybe it will reduce the level of engine noise!

Question: The air intake for the heater - what noise critical seals are there inside there?

Have to say, it made quite a difference to the engine noise.

how did you do the steering column one?

mines missing and have been wondering about best solution that doesn't involve dismantling.

have you done something to stop flashband sticking to column as this rotates?

I just stuck it to the bulkhead round the steering column. My rubber is missing too, and some PO had left sponge in the hole, so I stuck the flashing round the sponge.

Really, if you want it not to stick to the steering column, put something round the column first (like a piece of plastic bag). Then the flashing will stick to the plastic - in my case, not necessary as it won't stick to anything as dirty as the steering column!

One thing I spotted this morning. I seem to have some fuel leakage from the rear carb, and it ran down the body onto the flashing band, loosening the bitumen. Something to look out for - and this is only a temporary fix, as the flashing can come loose due to heat under the bonnet as well. Will do for now, though!

For the steering column seal, without removing the column, prepare a 3mm neoprene sheet with hole sized as per column and a single cut from hole to edge of sheet.

Glue to kickboard with Tigerseal or similar.
