Replacing foam in car seats

PostPost by: yellowelan » Sat Nov 16, 2013 11:04 am

Althought the seat covers are in good condition the foam is worn and thin and the hessian had ripped. They were quite uncomfortable with one of the support springs painfully hitting my tail bone when I sat on it.

I'm not sure how thick the foam is when it came out of the factory but I took apart all the hog rings and found the foam to be quite bad quality and only about 2.5cm thick. I suspect my seats have been rebuilt sometime during its lifetime.

I bought some high density foam. I used:

2.5cm thick 60cm x 15cm x2 for the sides and
5cm 2.5cm 44cm x 31cm for the center.

Trimmed the sides to shape using the old ones as a template

I bought some hessian at the fabric store. You need 70cmx70cm. I looked everywhere and finally found hog clip pliers in the fencing/wire section of the hardware store. They are 16mm clips

I stretched the new hessian over the frame. The sides foam pieces need a bit of contact adhesive to stay in place.

All up just under $50 (Aus) and a few hours work. The high density foam really makes the seats alot more comfortable.
