Heater Valve question

Hi,
My heater valve has started leaking, not an unusual problem I gather. On my Sprint currently I push the heater knob in to turn the heater off and pull it out to turn it on, is that the correct way round? Should the plate which clamps the outer shroud be flat or have a step in it where it is spot welded to the body?
I though I know what I wanted but having seen different heaters on the internet I am now confused!!
Thanks
Carl

Yes

This is a picture of my heater valve which has the clamp hooked into the body plate at the bottom and screwed in at the top.

Karl,
You can always buy any configuration of this valve and then swap the internals from the new valve to your old one. I did this using an MGB valve (I think) and it works as it should. As Brian said, out for ON in for OFF.
Colin.

Thanks for the info and photos. It's what I thought and what I already have. I was just 'confused' as I found somebody selling replacement valves who claimed that the Elan valves were the other way around, push for on and pull for off!
I recently dismantled a MGB valve as it was leaking and the whole of the aluminium sealing face inside was corroded, hopefully the one on my Elan will be in better condition as I know getting the valve off otherwise requires lifting one side of the engine to unscrew it! It's worth drilling out the rivet first and checking as I can get a MGB valve locally..

I have repaired two different styles of this water valve by using what was available from various sources. Colin is correct when he says they are all alike under the skin. The only problem I had was the newer valves were just a little bit different than the one, which was on the car. Buy using parts from both valves everything went together just fine. You do not have to remove the old valve from the head. Just drill out the rivet and twist the outer housing to removed the old parts and reinstall in the same manner. When the diaphragm ruptured while on a tour in the middle of no mans land, I could have used a plug to block off the water at the valve and at the other hose. Was able to rig up a temporary fix to get the 500 miles home. I now carry the bits I need in the tool roll to make a complete repair, should it happen again. Even carry a couple of the small "E" clips, because I know I will drop at least one.
