S4 and Sprint airflow vents

PostPost by: SADLOTUS » Thu Oct 27, 2011 7:33 pm

Hi all

Don't need them at the moment but after explaining to a neighbour about the Elan being a car of many sources he asked where the the airvents came from.... er... Rover 3 litre? I suggested - don't know why just a guess from a distant misty past. having surfed Rover dahboards for half an hour I don't think so.

Someone enlighten me please

They came from the +2 heater air inlet grill. Find a +2 being broken and ... Bob's your air grill.

Hi Tim,
Maybe I've got my wires crossed  but I'm looking for the small round air ducts at each end of dash (they fit into the plastic piller trims and have a flip type disc to open/close) .....are we on the same page :?

Duh!

I thought you meant the FHC side air vents in the roof behind the windows! Sorry. Yep, the dash vents are from a Rover 3 litre.

Your camera skills are simply amazing!

top of crashpad?, Dimister outlet?, pillar outlet?

Gary

I think top of crashpad vents are airflow Cortina mk1, same with the others except they are Cortina mk2 (eyeball and pillar)

I've been wrong before and don't much care any more!

And here they are lurking in the corners of a P5 dashboard...grotty picture, but you can just about make them out.

Someone only told me about these this week...quite a coincidence.

The trouble is....how many P5s do you think are still left? A darned sight less than the number of Elans I'm sure!

Not many and maybe, whatever the number, more LHD than RHD.

Might be worth giving these people a ring. Can't see them listed but you never know......

For those in need:

Oh and be careful of assuming all the Rover ones are correct - some have a different shaped cowl fitted to the front and the tube is noticeably shorter - good if you just need a donor inner disc but not for much else (ask me how I know!!).

Confession time.... actually this response does not relate to the little vents in the Elan but concerns the large eye-ball vents in the Cortina.

Many years ago I was asked to design a "fresh-air ventilator" for the humanoid life-forms who sat at Royal Mail's letter-coding desks for eight hours a day (or, more probably, night). These unfortunate individuals sat in an uncomfortable chair and typed the phosphor code-marks onto letters, which appeared right to left on a moving belt on an easel. The faster one typed the quicker the next letter appeared. It was not unknown for newbies to fall off their perch after 40 minutes, even the old-hands could be observed staggering to the on-site bar after two hours.

Anyway... the folks in the Ivory Towers asked me to see if I could make the task a little less onerous. First thing I did was provide a (mono) headphone socket, with choice of four radio stations (hey, this was 1970's!) then I drew up a fresh (well, ambient minus the dust) air system; what form of outlet control to use...? Best thing I'd ever seen was the Cortina eye-ball vent, only problem was the Cortina was long out of production. Many phone-calls to Ford later and the bloke who's job it was to unload surplus stock told me where I could find the entire recently disposed-of stock. I bought the job-lot, just under 400 units.

So my profound apologies to Cortina restorers, I'm ashamed to say that when the coding-desks were scrapped, some years later, the vents went with them.

With over a million Mk 2 Cortinas made, so 2 million eyballs, and something less than a couple of thousand cars left, I don't think that there will be a shortage of Cortina eyeballs anytime soon....they were Elan Plus 2 items as well, so add another few thousand on!!!

I think that the teeny weeny Elan / Rover ones may be further up the endangered species list.

I believe the large one is also the type fitted to the Europa.
