LSD oil

Hi all, has anyone found an alternate LSD oil for plated diffs other than the Castrol B373? We change ours quite frequently while racing and it's getting a bit costly. Must be some other breed on the market at a more competitive price?

We have been told by our sponsors Rock Oil, that there is an imminent price rise on the horizon of around 50%. Might be a good idea to get some oil in the garage now!! As we are not racing this year, got a bit expensive, we are considering doing a few sprints and climbs. Going to give one of the ATB diffs a go rather than refit the plated one. Some events don't like LSD's at all. We can perhaps sneak an ATB in, rather than the plated one clattering like bulls bollocks as you enter scrutineering I know they aren't as good as the plated, but probably OK for what we need. Time will tell. Upside is they only need standard oil. At least it looks like we should get some motorsport this year.

If you want the best buy Redline. You should not need to change the oil as often as you are ( every 2 races ) unless your doing endurance racing ?
In an Elan a ATB / Torsen style diff will do most of what you need unless you set up the rear to hard. I only have one corner on all my tracks where i find I have a traction limit using the Quaiffe ATB and that is the first section of the long sweeping left hander out of the tight right hand MG corner at Phillip Island where you are accelerating flat out in second gear as you turn left at the same time.

I use Motul 75W140 with an ATB.
I change the oil every 2-3 hours of racing.
I have previously used Redline in other vehicles with great success and would probably have used it in the Elan had Tony T not told me he'd void my warranty!

ATB's don't need a different grade of oil to normal open diff oil, but you should use a quality oil non the less. I have stripped quite a few ATB's (Quaife) and they do wear despite being sold as "maintenance free" - that to me means that as there are no friction plates, cross-pins and ramp blocks to wear, when it fails it's cheaper to buy a compete unit than individual components as it's likely the gears and the housing where the load is taken will all be showing signs of breaking down, material "smearing" and worn/damaged teeth.
Use the best GL5 oil you are willing to afford and you can't do any more really. I believe Quaife recommend Fuchs products for their ATB units.

Note unlike a lot of other oil companies Fuchs are an OEM supplier. OEMS are quite strict on who and who doesn't get OEM oil supply contracts and the OEM will have used the oil they specify in their durability testing.

Couple of corners at Croft where it's very bumpy on the inside. I'm told the ATB's are fine until one wheel leaves the deck, then the unit doesn't work. We run pretty soft on the Elan +2 so should be fine. Had a word with the Rock guy and he has said don't use a high sulphur type as is does wear the components faster. He has an Elise race car with ATB and is going to get me the same stuff, as he has had no trouble at all with his car. The makers of the diff have said to drain after first use as there will be particles produced till it settles in. Hopefully we will find it works to our liking. At least the choice of oil is greater, being a standard gear oil. We do deal with the German breed mentioned, so will ask them as well. Thanks for your comments, Rob

I have no idea what a TT warranty is actually worth.....!
