Differential rebuild video

PostPost by: sabbot » Wed Sep 08, 2021 1:51 am

I’m just about to embark on changing the crown wheel and pinion ratio on a spare elan diff and was wondering if anybody has posted a video of setting up the pinion / crush washer etc. I’ve read various articles and have the workshop manual but given a picture is worth a 1000 words I figured a video might be worth reviewing before I start, if there are any available. All suggestions would be appreciated.

I wrote up an diff rebuild with photos a while back in 2015 that addresses many of the common issues if doing it yourself. Worth the read if you have not seen it. No video sorry

5 Years of racing on that diff since then with zero issues, noise or leaks. The first diff lasted 20 years of racing since I rebuilt it with a Quaife centre. ( and 20 years of road and race use before that) so 15 more to go at least :)

cheers

hey sabbot!
I've just finished my (first) diff rebuild. It's not in the car yet, so I cannot say at this point if I`ve been successful. But I could send you some helpful video links that explain some things in general, not particularly for the ford english diff, but that doesn't matter at least for a few things. You should at least have the tool to measure the "cap spread" as mentioned in the book or have the ability to produce one, nothing really complicated. All you need are two dial indicators and some metal. Then, if you want to change pinion and crownwheel you should be able to calculate the pinion height. There are general toolsets available to do that. I haven't used them, cause I did not change the crownwheel or pinion, but I've found a youtube video that explains how to calculate and use them. Without that pinion height measurement tool you may take the diff apart several times before you get it right. Let me know, if you´d be interested.

Thank you Matthias,
Any additional hints would be appreciated. I am going to be changing the crown wheel and pinion as I just acquired a 3.3:1 ratio set from NTG for my 4 speed +2. I’ll be able to weld a “C” bracket to measure the cap spread.
Thanks again,
Stewart
