Backslash, Preload and more values for Differential Rebuild

PostPost by: Vali » Wed Sep 14, 2016 9:13 am

Hello from Germany,

Currently I am restauring a Elan S4 SE FHC and changed from an Open Differential to a Quaife LSD.
My private Mechanic, who will set the Differential with new bearings on the Pinion and the Quaife needs the values how it has to be adjusted. Preload, Backslash and more ...
Where do I find those values? Are there books for it?

I do have the Owner Workshop Manual and the Elan Book from Brian Buckland but I am not able to find out how to set the Differential. I understand that the Setting is nothing for Beginners that is why I am not doing it myself.

At the Moment I know that the Differential is from a Ford English and following values are true?
- CW & P Backslash 0.13 to 0.18 mm

I hope someone can help me. :)

Ciao,
Valentin

Hi,

Yes they are the correct figures for CW&P backlash. That axle centre was used in a wide variety of english Fords throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's. Any workshop manuals for the following vehicles will have the figures you need:

Ford Anglia - 1959-62 (first vehicle with this axle)
Ford Cortina Mk1 and MkII - 1967 - 1970
Ford Classic and Corsair
Ford Capri (most 4cyl. models) 1969 - 1972 (thereabouts)
Ford Escort Mk1- 1968 - 1975
Ford Escort Mk2 - 1975 - 1981 (most models)

Suggest you go to a library and photocopy the relevant pages out of any of these manuals.

Regards
1970 Ford Escort Twin Cam
1972 Ford Escort GT1600 Twin Cam
1980 Ford Escort 2.0 Ghia
Peugeot 505 GTI Wagons (5spdx1) (Autox1)
2022 Ford Fiesta ST.
