Play in differential

PostPost by: seniorchristo » Fri Jun 19, 2015 1:22 am

I purchased a used 3.55 differential which seems to have excessive play in the internal gears. If the axles are held in place there is about 3/16"+ of radial movement at the circumference of the pinion flange. Does anyone know the specs for this or have an opinion?
Thanks,
Chris :)

The spec is .005 - .007" at the crown wheel with pinion not moving. You probably have some internal issues.

That spec is backlash on the crown wheel to pinion teeth. if you hold the output shafts with the diff assembled you also have the backlash in the spider gears of the differential which have substantially more clearance. I dont think 3/16 of an inch at the circumference of the input shaft is excessive.

Rohan
Thanks again! You are a wealth of Lotus information! Both of my diffs have around that same amount of play.

Chris :)

Hi

I would concur with Rohan as I had my propshaft off recently and that is around the back lash I had at the drive flange.
