Rotoflex - Donut Savers

Is anybody using these:

New to me and at $280 for a car's worth they are nearly as much as the doughnuts.

They add about 3/8" to the length of each drive shaft so will only fit cars with rose-tinted suspension provided there is bodywork clearance for the track increase.

On second thoughts, they might just fit under the bolt heads and so not affect the total length though the text suggests that isn't the intention. It depends how deep the two halves penetrate whether this is an option

...or you could weld a bit of bar and a bit of tube in-line as lotus did later on...

I have spyder shafts which have a rotoflex with centering pin at one end and cv the other, the pins certainly seem to extend rotoflex life.

These gizmos have been mentioned at least once before on this website, but I don't recall anyone saying that they used them.

May I suggest a search for "vintage technology garage" in yahoo groups. Keith developed a solution for his Lotus 41.

Keith's version involves boring a hole each spider and installing the pin and sockets. No length issues.

These things have been around for a while mainly used for vintage Formula Race cars which still use the Rotoflex, Formula Fords and B's. I have read some discussion on these on this forum that they cannot be used on our Elans. The reason was that the Formula car has very little suspension travel while the Elan have quite a bit. As a result, the donut saver will bend out of shape on the Elan. I don't have first hand knowledge of this, but was definitely mentioned on this board before but couldn't find it again. Most likely buried in some hijacked thread lol.
