Propshaft U/Js

Is there a preferential way round of fitting new U/J s to an Elan propshaft from the point of view of the grease nipples facing to the front or back?

Standard practice is for the nipples to face the centre of the car.

However, for an Elan, face the rear one backwards to allow access for the grease gun.

I'm still confused on the issue of grease nipples on the propshaft. I have just fitted new U/Js that came with the extended type of grease nipple, about an inch in length. As far as I can tell whatever way round you fit the U/J on the gearbox end the amount of movement angle of the propshaft seems very restrictive. Do a lot of people fit ones without grease nipples? I am thinking that standard grease nipples would be too short to use a grease gun with.
