Differential Set-up

PostPost by: Foxie » Wed Jul 06, 2011 9:47 pm

I have just received delivery of a new crown-wheel and pinion, inc brgs etc.

I have set up many worn diffs in the past, but never had to set up the pinion depth.

I see from the manual that special tools dummy pinion shaft and measuring tool depth gauge are used to set up the pinion. As I don't have these, it seems I will have to use trial and error and marking blue to get the pinion shims right.

Any ideas ? What the normal range of shims ? :D

Migt be worth giving Jon (Miller) or Paul (Cobban) a call.

I know Paul does Diffs reasonably regularly.

Peter

I got an information sheet from Burtons with the CW&P, the tooth contact markings are the final arbiter.

We'll be in Killalloe (Kill-al-luuuuuu , i've been told  ) on the 19th, for a social evening :D

I have been told that Burtons now offer a full diff set up service but I do not know the cost!

Here it is. There are 7 pages on this in the workshop manual, but the end contact check is what counts.

IMHO the most tedious part is establishing the correct pinion shims
