But when was the coin minted? The alloys used differed over time...

From February 1971 to September 92 - Bronze (97% copper, 2.5% zinc, 0.5% tin)
Since September 1992 to date - Copper-plated steel (with the exception of 1998 when they were made in both alloys )

I'm sure Randy (Sea Ranch) needs to know this detail...

I thought that ?2.74 was a bit steep for a 1" steel disc. And armed with a comprehensive discussion of the origins and design of the Welch plug, all I needed was a 1" steel disc to manufacture said Welch plug. washers have a hole in and making a disc didn't appeal. Then I remembered the Wikipedia article "...drove a quarter or half dollar into the hole."

It was a 2010 Coin - copper plated steel. Chosen because of its material properties and because I don't like the half a flag design. It looks rater retro Coventry Climax

billwill - it is ok on 3 counts - 1. I found it down the back of the sofa so they had forgotten that they had it. 2. It had a stack of 10 others next to it so it was no longer legal tender. 3 They've just printed another ?150 bn more so they won't miss 2p (and actually I'm doing them a favour)

Note for Randy on point 2 - "copper" coins to the value exceeding 20 pence can be declined as not legal tender.

Yup, legal tender . . . I'm familiar with the concept. But I was waiting for someone to take issue with Simon's absolutely brilliant bit of creative fabrication on the basis of metalurgy and future corrosion potential . . .
